Tampa is the 3rd largest city in Florida (after Jacksonville and Miami) and as part of the Tampa-St. Petersburg metropolitan district, the 12th largest in the US. The city is located on a large natural harbor along the west coast of Florida off the Gulf of Mexico. The city is thought to be named after the Indian word for "sticks of fire" which may relate to the large number of lightning strikes that hit the area during the summer months.

Tampa's economy is based heavily on tourism and services. The Port of Tampa is Florida's largest, handling about half of all cargo in the state. It is also the 7th largest in the US. The cruise industry has a major presence here with over 900,000 passengers passing through the port in 2006.

Moderated by the Gulf of Mexico, temperatures remain pleasant during the winter months, hovering around 65°F. Hurricane season is from June through November.
